I was listening to a podcast on Fatima and the strong insinuation that Pope JP II's death, foretold by Lucia, by assassination was prevented by the prayers and penance of the faithful. It's such an antidote to the helplessness the world shoves on us, that our God invites us to change the course of history.

Thanks Christie. Yes, I've also heard it said that a nuclear war was averted in the mid-80s through the prayers of the faithful. Even a couple of years ago, the same thing was mentioned when the North Korean President became a bit agitated and it looked for a while like he might fire a nuclear weapon in earnest. In this respect, we are active agents in how events unfold. We're not in charge but we have a role, analogous perhaps to that of the hobbits in The Lord of the Rings - of little worldly account but significant enough in their own way to make the crucial difference.

In the very same episode on Fatima, they went into detail about how nuclear was averted. I never knew! Come, Lord Jesus!

"What if God gets there first?"...."What if", indeed - this is something I've believed for over ten years now...

What if, the 'End Times' don't have to play out as Biblically prophesied? What if those prophecies were intended to tell us what happens 'if we don't pray for God's intervention'?

Maybe all it takes to get a Miracle, is enough believers praying for one?

Another excellent essay, John - God Bless you!

Thank you Carol. I agree. 'The rain falls on bad and good alike.' We've always got to bear that in mind but there's also the story of Abraham's pleading for Sodom, where even if there are just ten righteous folk to be found there then God will not destroy it. So these things are taken account of, but absolutely nothing - as the story of Sodom shows us - can be taken for granted. No room for complacency then, but plenty of scope for hope.
